Sounds Like Family

Creating & Recording Family Audio Archives.

MORE

Story & Song. Verse & Recitation.
Poems & Promises.  Laughter & Sounds of All Sorts.
They speak to us. They sing and story our lives.
They embed themselves in the deepest parts of our experience
to the point where we remember many of our life events
by particular Songs, Sounds & Stories.

Immersed in the ‘Here & Now’ with our children
it’s easy to believe that our Family Soundscapes will remain with us forever.
Like many things, however, these Moments & Melodies will elude our grasp
on some distant day as we reminisce and recollect.

In our present day culture we most often archive family life visually
through photo albums and home movies. The hand-held camcorder and now the ‘smart phone’ have become the predominant archival tool
and memory catcher for families.

But what about Sound?
What about the rich soundscapes that play through our daily lives?

Sounds Like Family helps families
create their own unique Family Audio Archives.
I work with you and your family members to orchestrate and capture
unique and singular digital recordings of your family.

I do House-calls …

I arrive at your home with high quality digital recording equipment
to capture and create your family’s audio archive in the places and spaces
where you and your children are most comfortable.

You may have certain songs, stories,
poems, recitations or sayings special to your family.
We’ll sketch out a plan that will allow us to be
both organized and spontaneous
as the session unfolds.

Cost: Please contact me for workshop fees

Logistics:

In order to create high quality recordings we will use an Apple MacBook (with Garage Band And Logic recording software), a Tascam interface unit that enables us to connect two Rhode NT1 condenser microphones for recording purposes.  I also employ a Zoom H4n portable 4-track recording device that can be used to create instant, high quality recordings in classroom situations.   I will also provide headphones.

We most often meet in your home to create our recordings but it is also possible to meet in a mutually determined location.

Requirements:

Normally, each family chooses and prepares a repertoire of material before I arrive.  Many families have favourite songs, poems, jokes, anecdotes and stories that they would like to ‘capture’ and have available as audio archives for sharing with other families and friends.

I don’t usually record video footage but families are most welcome to do so while we create our audio recordings.

MORE

The Typewriter Lullaby is an example of an original script I began writing in order to have a working story to use with students in a workshop-setting (likely for a visit of longer duration like an artist-in-residence experience). The story exists in a skeleton form only—the idea being that students would add to the plot, add new characters and flesh out existing ones.

The plot centers around a beautiful old typewriter named Stella and becomes a loose meditation on technology and “progress.” Some of the characters, in particular some of the children in the story question the typewriter in the age of the iPod and the 140 character Twitter Universe.

In addition to the written script I have also narrated and recorded parts of the story including vignettes and guest appearances from some of the characters like
Charles Mortimer Taggert.

Logistics:

I view The Typewriter Lullaby as a form of “Radio Theatre” which requires the listener to actively imagine the characters and the unfolding story.  I provide the recording gear and scripts which include narration, poems and songs.  The teacher and students may want to bring or create any kind of props, sound effects (pre-recorded and live).

Requirements:

The Typewriter Lullaby is an example of an original story that I created the framework for so that students would have the building blocks to continue the story.  Students and teachers are most welcome to create their own story to record.
